You're not a hamster, so get off the wheel.

You're not a hamster, so get off the wheel.

Lately, I’ve noticed the design world is moving at a frantic pace, but we aren’t actually getting anywhere. Every conversation, every panel, and every "hot take" seems to orbit the same thing: the tech. We are obsessed with what’s new in AI, what Figma just dropped, or which plugin is currently "essential."

There is more chatter about the engine than there is about the destination. And that is a problem.

The Hamster Wheel of "New"

Update. Upgrade. Repeat. We are so busy keeping up with the software that we often forget to show up as ourselves.

Yes, stay informed. Yes, learn what’s out there.

But not at the expense of your own presence. When we spend all our energy chasing the latest version of a tool, we stop leading the process, and there is no intent behind the work. Before you realize it, you aren't mastering the tech, you’re scrambling until the next update.

What Companies Actually Hire

Here’s the reality: Companies don’t hire tech stacks. They hire people. They hire judgment, taste, and creative chemistry. They hire culture fits, not plug-in pros.

Influencer culture exists because people want connection, not perfection. They follow personality, not polish. They engage with you, not your gear list.

The Bottom Line

Your clients don’t care about your system specs. They care about whether you can meet a budget, hit a deadline, and move the needle on their business goals.

Your audience doesn’t care how you built it. They care how it makes them feel.

Technology will always evolve. It’s a relentless spin-cycle. But your insight, your voice, and your weird creative fingerprints—those are the only constants.

Get off the hamster wheel.

Design doesn’t start with software; it starts with the messy, brilliant, and intentional thinking that happens before the screen is turned on.
