The Emperor's New Technology

The tools are getting smarter. Are you?
Remember The Emperor’s New Clothes? The story where a vain ruler struts around naked while everyone nods and pretends it’s fine?
Yeah. Welcome to the remake: everyone dressed head-to-toe in software.
Affinity launches its shiny new suite. Adobe drops another “revolutionary” update. Figma rolls out a feature that’s going to “change everything.”
And suddenly, everyone’s in the parade again, polishing their prompts, chasing plugins, and rushing to look relevant. We’re not just using the tools anymore; we’re wearing them. Like the Emperor, we’ve mistaken technology for identity.
But here’s the truth no software update can patch:
No platform can give you taste, insight, or experience. It won’t teach you why something feels right, or when to break your own rules.
It can’t replace the years of doing, failing, fixing, and growing that built your creative instincts in the first place.
We’ve started dressing ourselves in technology and calling it talent. But underneath all that digital tailoring, it’s still you doing the thinking, the deciding, the creating.
Defining yourself by your software suite is short-sighted. Because in six months, there’ll be a new version, a new feature, a new Emperor. And if your creative identity is stitched to the latest tool, what happens when the fabric changes?
Technology will always evolve.
Your value is what stays constant underneath it — your eye, your voice, your judgment. That’s the part no subscription, update, or beta test can replace.
Don’t get me wrong, technology will make you faster, cleaner, more precise, repeatable, but do these describe creativity? No, they don’t. Eventually, they are nothing.
Are you strutting around in clothes that will disappear, or are you dressed in you?
